That was the last communication we had and meanwhile, I've found this thread and the link you posted with the scam details. I sent him an invoice and he said that he would need to talk to the kids' driver about the dates before committing. He sounded like he was trying to sell me on the app, which was the red flag I actually paid attention to, but I already made the mistake of saying I can accept Stripe. When I confirmed the dates, he refused to use PayPal and instead try to get me to use Clover Go. No one does that, but I believed the hard of hearing, lung cancer story he gave me. He wanted to book 32, 2-hour drum lessons with me for his kids and pay up front. just happened to get an email from "Troy" last week. I'm going to randomly resurrect this thread. I also wanted to see how far i could go with but i’m not that creative or funny □□□ unfortunately us freelancers / small biz need to be extra wearyĮdit: found this article about it, just not with clover specifically Glad i stumbled upon your post, thank you for sharing. it’s america and we have a lot of different people here but, given the circumstances it was an extra red flag lol which wouldn’t normally deter me because well. ![]() i work for another church asa designer)Īnd literally said the same shit: my credit card won’t work with paypal or square etc etc can you download clover?ĪND like you said, had some broken english. Had somewhat relevant ideas to suggest he was a friend of my works (Like how your dude was “from” your hometown, this guy wanted me This guy didn’t give me enough details for a good quote even after me asking multiple times Hey man, the same thing happened to me and I can’t find anything online about it either. Anyone been targeted by something like this? Anyone know how this would work? My question is: How can one get scammed by using a merchant processing system? I was thinking this was gonna be some "send me a check then I pay someone else", or a "Western Union send money" or something. I tell him I'm not an event planner and he'll need to figure that out, and also make the payment through Square. The scammer asks me to find a venue for him and he'll travel out to it. I also bring up the fact that the venue has never heard of him and is already booked on the proposed date. I tell him Clover is only POS and doesn't do online invoices. I get back with the scammer and he now asks me if I accept Clover and to download the Clover app. A quick search on Facebook reveals the guy does exist and even makes posts in the similar run on sentence broken English style. I call the number listed for the venue and the guy there says they have a NYE all weekend thing for Dec 29, and a wedding on Jan 5. By this time I decide to check with the venue to see if they know anything. He states that his credit card won't work with Square or PayPal and asks again if I use another merchant. I tell him I also have a PayPal account and will accept a check. He then starts asking if I use another merchant other than Square. I got his email and sent over the contract, planner, and reservation fee + final fee invoices since we are so close to the date. Since it's 350+ miles away from where I live I charged a hefty travel fee and made him know up front. I finally extract venue and time info from him and tell him a price. I tell him I'm available Jan 5 and Jan 12, and he says let's do Jan 5. I decide to continue and see how deep the rabbit hole goes. This immediately set off the bullshit alarm since there is no way someone would move their venue date so close to the event. I tell him I'm busy Dec 29 and he comes back asking when I am available. So over the weekend a guy is texting me wanting a DJ for his Birthday Party on Dec 29. I not believe they are coming from Biloxi since my area code prefix is still for that city. I am now in Atlanta, GA, and it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to request me for Mississippi since my old friends or family may be putting my name out there. Either they don't tell me the venue location, or they don't tell me the time.Īnother thing that makes these odd is the requests are for Biloxi, MS (my hometown). The first couple were non-starters since the requester never gave me enough info to submit a quote. ![]() ![]() Recently I've been contacted by text with some broken English and misspellings for a DJ. Never heard of a Clover scam and couldn't find anything online about it. Tl dr Don't do business with anyone who won't accept payment on your terms.
